Concrete and Grass!

The Flatwheelers (Jake Hyer and myself) are psyched to be invited to play once again at third annual Concrete and Grass festival at Mears Park in Downtown St. Paul. It’s a great outdoor festival that runs from Sept 11-13 this year. And it’s free. We’ll be playing at 4pm on Sunday the 13th. Followed by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra! Then  followed by our friends Heiruspecs at 6. More info at concreteandgrass.com

The Flatwheelers

In this day and age of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and the like, the ol’ dot com website gets a little neglected. Well, here’s the deal. My main project these days is The Flatwheelers, a duo with Jake Hyer (formerly of The Get Up Johns and a long-time collaborator with the Devaney Band). We have a bunch of shows coming up, including one with the band that we are recording our debut with. Here’s the press release and upcoming show info:

Martin Devaney and Jake Hyer have played music together for years. After
enjoying a brief stint playing as a duo as The Porchlights, they have
renamed themselves The Flatwheelers and are celebrating the name with
their first full band show at the Turf Club on Saturday, September 5th.
The Flatwheelers are currently well into recording their debut with
producer Mark Stockert (Brian Setzer, Big Ditch Road, Devaney's own
records and many more) in Minneapolis. Joining them onstage for this gig
are the fine friends and musicians that appear on the record: Dave Boquist
(Son Volt, John Eller and the DTs), Steve Murray (Molly Maher, Sherwin
Linton), and Mick Wirtz (Bellwether).

Rounding out the bill are The Brass Kings, Como Ave. Jug Band, and Gabe
Barnett.

Fan Fiction

Fan Fiction is a new band I’m in with Kate Murray. We occasionally have people play shows and record with us. In fact, this Thursday, August 6th at the 501 Club in Minneapolis, we are doing just that. Here’s the info:

7:00pm
Fan Fiction

8:00pm
The Warblers (Chris Osgood and Dave Ahl)

9:00pm
Steve Almas and Friends

10:00pm
Suicide Commandos

11:00pm
Jen Markey and the Buckboard Boys

Chris, Dave, and Steve are the original members of the Suicide Commandos – a band that was considered the Midwest’s answer to the Ramones during the mid-70’s punk movement. They rocked CBGBs, even opened for said Ramones, and paved the way for beloved local giants like Husker Du and the Replacements.

This is an opportunity to see these punk catalysts in an intimate setting: the at-once posh and familiar 501 Club in downtown Minneapolis.

Fan Fiction will kick things off, combining rock and alt-country with biting lyrics veiled by soothing harmonies and harmonica fills; followed by the guys of the SC showcasing their new side projects, after which the three will reunite for a special Commandos set. Jen Markey will close out the night with her tough-ass brand of rockin’ Americana. This one should not be missed!

“Old” No Depression feature!

July gigs

I’ll be playing an actual “Martin Devaney” set at the Red Stag in NE Minneapolis on July 16. 930pm

On Sat. July 18th, Jake Hyer and I will be playing (still as The Porchlights) at Grumpy’s (also in NE MPLS.) for the Northeast Folk Festival. There are going to be several great acts and we are on the inside stage at 7.

more to follow soon,
Martin

Hello.

As anyone who has visited this site in the recent past knows, we’ve had some problems with martindevaney.com. In this day and age of the sprawling online world, musicians, artists, writers and well, everyone has a greater opportunity to reach out to the world. There is also a heck of a lot more to maintain. So for now, in lieu of an actual website, we’re going to have this blog to give you updates, etc. At some point soon, our great friend Dan Haugen will be building a new Eclectone Records website, which will have all your relevant Devaney news. This site will automatically link to that.

So there you have it. As for goings on:

Wed. Feb 18th, I’ll be part of a songwriter night at the 318 Cafe in Excelsior, MN

The Porchlights
